Troop 1 Southborough - Est. 1915

Boy Scouts of America - Where the Adventure Begins!

Forward

An American had gotten lost in the fog in the United Kingdom. He was making his way through it when a boy appeared and offered to take him to his destination. When they arrived, the American tried to tip the boy. The boy courteously refused, and explained that he was a Scout and could not accept payment for a good turn.  The man's name was William D. Boyce. On February 8, 1910, Boyce created the Boy Scouts of America.

Troop 1

Troop 1 Southborough, Massachusetts was founded in 1915 by Rev. R. F.  Cheney of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Cheney, unlike his philosophical predecessors, was more of a outdoors man and a naturalist.  Under his supervision, Troop 1 flourished, and by the 1920’s Troop 1 was performing the Boy Scouts shows at the town hall. Troop 1 was the first troop in Southborough, but Troops 2, 3, and 4 came after it. Troop 1 is the only troop of that list that is still active, because of its history, because of the leaders who teach scouting skills, and because the active scouts that join it.

This is from Jeff Owen's eagle project, telling of one of the original location of Troop 1.

Troops 2, 3, & 4

All three of these troops were founded in the 20's. The troops were created due to the sons' parents not wanting to mix with different religions. Troops 2 & 3 managed to hover around 5 to six members, but the troop never took off. Before WWII, Troops 2 and 3 were merged with Troop 1. Troop 4 was a different story. This troop's members were all from St. Marks military program. The program required its participants to join this troop. Troop 4 was very competitive, and their camp's were always in perfect shape. In one national jamboree, they earned more medals than any other troop. There were stories of the scouts helping after fires and braving blizzards. The Troop was eventually disbanded when WWII ended.
